The second of the three big carnival
group 1 racedays featured the Group 1 SA Derby but the day started out
with the Oaklands Plate which was won in impressive fashion by the NZ
bred Donna Cattiva from Chosen Moment. In the second race it was a
local victory with Star of Zena fighting off Beau Jez to win with
Impulse Buy putting in another consistent run for third. Star of
Zena was offered at the 2011 Adelaide Magic Millions sales as part of
the Emirates Park Stud draft. In the third race Bundle O'Gold was
having his first run after returning from Hong Kong where he was sold as
a very promising young horse a number of years ago. Striding along
in front his condition caught up with him under the big weight in the
home straight as Beldara came away to win her second start in a row from
Victorian Johnny Fiasco with local North Beach third.
In race 4 there was plenty of interest in the well performed 3yo
Decircles pre race but in the run Classy Chloe gave nothing else and
chance dashing clear over the closing stages to win easily from the
talented Petman with Meadows Cat third. The Adelaide Guineas was
next for the 3yos where Riziz strode away strongly to the line to win
from Kinselmac Manner who tried hard with The New Boy in third place.
The next was the Provincial Series Final and Detox showed the family
ability as the half sister to Alcopop fought her way to a determined win
over the late flying grey Ballypatrick with the consistent Silent
Attitude third in the capacity field.
The main race of the day was next the
$500,000 SA Derby which assembled a group of promising 3yo stayers from
Victoria, NSW, WA and South Australia. Strike the Stars and
Sabrage had been campaigning in the top 3yo races of the autumn with
Zabeelionaire coming through a Melbourne build up while Pelicano,
Cornell, Alcohol, Essence and Heaven's Riches had prepared via the local
features both for 3yos and open classes. Backbone had his previous
run in another traditional lead up the VRC St Leger while Lethal Jones
and Reign of Terror had comes through the feature races in WA while the
lightly raced but talented Tohunga came from NSW. SA hope
Pelicano went forward early with Essence but in the run to the line it
was Zabeelionaire charging along the fence who prevailed from the fast
finishing Sabrage with Westsouthwest running on well for third.
Strike the Stars who ran fourth in the ATC Derby at his previous start
was again fourth in SA with Tohunga fifth.
Addiction to Rock stormed home to
claim the last from Dubawi Gold with Adamantium third while observations
were made in preparation for next week Super Saturday. The finale
of the SA Autumn carnival features the return of Black Caviar due to
line up in the Goodwood to attempt her 21st win from 21 starts some
which at this level of racing is unprecedented. |
