Morphettville Races - Pictorial Report

9 June 2012

With a lot of rain in the week leading up to the race meeting the two usual jumps in the home straight for the Hurdle were amended to be one jump a little wider on the track than is normal but with safety considered first and foremost this was the best course of action.  The did mean that photographers had to walk a lot further up the track than normal but that in itself presented the opportunity to take photos of the grandstand an at angle I rarely get to see on racedays and also a close up shot of the Panasonic pavilion which is always packed full on the big racedays such as Adelaide Cup, Super Saturday etc and often used for corporate gatherings at other times.  The jumps jockeys also lined up for an unusual photo at the jump in the straight.  Normally jockeys take their mounts down to the first fence to 'give them a look' but this day due to the unusual placement of the jump towards the centre of the track the jockeys chose this jump to show their mounts and ended up standing there so I had the chance to take the group photo as seen below.  Soon after the race was on with Yesquire leading from Lord of the Song with Trenchtown next followed by Zaman and Sultan of Seed in a closely packed field.  Along the back Yesquire led Trenchtown with Lord of the Song in third with Zaman and Sultan of Speed next.  Over the second last Lord of the Song made his move to take control around the turn from Yesquire with Zaman running on.  Over the last jump Lord of the Song was well in control but Zaman starting to make a sustained run and it was a battle in two dwn the straight with Lord of the Song just holding off the challenge to win with a gap back to Yesquire third from Sultan of Speed and Trenchtown.

Race 2 was for the 2yos where Night Breeze led from Portici with saturday Affair back second last.  Around the turn portici headed Night Breeze with Love of Liberty soon with Wild Journey challenging and it looked like this trio would fight it out until Saturday Affair burst between runners inside the final 50m to win impressively from Love of Liberty with Wild Journey third.

In the third race Evenmoreaction was joined down the straight by Mr Lowndes who looked like he would surge to victory but Evenmoreaction was not about to give up and came back again strongly and in the last few strides gained control to win from Mr Lowndes with Sky Raider third while in the fourth race Pilot's lane proved too strong in a crowded finished with Conduction trying very hard in second and Foodeater close up on the outside in third.

Other winners on the day were Bermondsey who won his second successive race from Gonski Girl while Prince of Capers and Harmonic made it a race to race double for Tony McEvoy.  In the last race number 17 (the first emegency who only gained a start after scratchings) Handsome As won from Final Command with Our Iridium third.
