The carnival may be over but racing
continued at Morphettville and this week saw the first hurdle of the
current season being run at racing headquarters in SA. The season
started over two months ago in early March but races had been returning
to the provincial tracks including Gawler, Murray Bridge and Mt Gambier
in addition to Oakbank a Easter.
While the horses were still in the
yard the lawns were empty bar a couple of suspected protestors and a
security guard but in the sunshine more spectators than usual came out
from the main grandstand to line the hedge on the outside as the
horses made their way to the start. After three
scratchings a field of 6 lined up for the race run on the main track and
raced as a tightknit group until inside the final 800m where favourite
Lord of the Song and Goldtown pulled away from Sultan of Speed with
Champion Chestnut running on as Its the Truth and Chatillion were
retired from the race around the home turn after losing considerable
ground in the wet track conditions. Lord of the Song looked to be
going easily around the home turn and put the race beyond doubt over the
second last as Goldtown knuckled on landing dislodging A Lynch (who kept
his feet in the dismount and actually ran out of the way on the oncoming
runners) before regaining his feet and jumping the last (as seen in the
photo below). Lord of the Song cleared the last to win by a big
margin to Champion Chestnut second with Sultan of Speed in third.
In the second race for the 2yos
Fuming (by Testa Rossa) showed improvement over the longer journey from
his previous starts to hold off the challenge from Navan Lass with Bon
Ton third. In the third race it was Fastizio (by Scenic) who made
a determined run down the outside to grab the lead from Robrick inthe
shadows of the post to win with Andronica third. In race 4 it was
battle up the straight as a group of horses all fought to gain the upper
hand with a huge lunge on the line by Sandhill Prince proving the
winning move scoring narrowly from Sky Raider who ran on along the
inside and Little Akie trying hard on the outside.
The fifth race was for 3yos and
drew a good field of promising horses and any one of a group could have
prevailed as they turned for home but soon after it looked like the
determined Our Snippy might make it two from three but in the final 50m
he was run down by Avoid Lightning (by Blevic) who was also going for
two wins from three starts while in third place was El Prado Gold.
Counter Sign, Gold Frenzy and
Tabulated won the remaining races on the program
