The second day of the carnival opened
with a race for fillies and mares and it was Goodfun Girl who was too
good winning from Quick Lover with Forever Discreet third. The 3yo
Hcp was next where House of Wax was too strong in a three way finish
defeating Deflection with Thomason third.
The first of the jumps races was next
with the Yalumba Classic Hurdle (registered as the Harry D Young
Hurdle). Fair Script and Funded went to the early lead from
Dubhdara then Clangor followed by He's Hot to Trot and Trenchtown.
Into the straight along the back on the first lap Funded led from
Dubhdara then Fair Script and Clangor followed by He's Hot to Trot.
Into the home straight the first time and Funded led Dubhdara then a
line of three of Fair Script, Clangor and He's Hot to Trot then
Trenchtown and Mateo. Over the second in the straight Dubhdara
outjumped Funded to take a narrow led with Clangor third from Fair
Script. Into the back straight again and Funded kicked to a clear
lead then Dubhdara as Clangor was third from Trenchtown then He's Hot to
Trot. Dubhdara took the lead as they started the long turn for
home from Funded who was starting to tire with He's Hot to Trot putting
in his bid from Trenchtown and Mateo. Over the second last and
both Trenchtown and Mateo put in their challenges to Dubhdara from
Scotland the Brave who started to run on from He's Hot to Trot.
The three leaders were spread across the track to the last jump where
Dubhdara put in a huge leap to clear it well and gain an advantage over
Trenchtown who catleapt the last as did Mateo with Take Out running on
from well back. In the run to the line Dubhdara was just too good
coming away to win from Trenchtown with Mateo third and Take Out fourth
as all horses completed the course. Dubhdara is making a habit of
winning feature jumps races in SA with this race added to the two
previous SA Grand National Hurdles.
The COuntry CUp was next where
Prestige Glen made a strong run from well back up the home straight to
come away to win from Set On Stone with Stable Star third. It was
then time for the main race of the day the Great Eastern Steeplechase.
Riviera Star led early from Rangatira with The Democrat moving up to
third ahead of Jooli Lad and Prussian Officer the Lord of the Song.
Over the log Riviera Star led from Rangatira then Jooli Lad and The
Democrat with Lord of the Song next with Prussian Officer. Over
the second last jump before the home straight Riviera Star misjudged the
fence and knuckled on landing unseating his jockey while Rangatira was
left alone in front from Jolli Lad and The Democrat. In the home
straight on the first lap Rangatira led The Democrat and Rangatira with
Lord of the Song next then Prussian Officer with the riderless Riviera
Star trying to slot in on the outside. Heading up to the log for
the second time Rangatira put on the pace racing away with a huge lead
from Jooli Lad and The Democrat then Prussian Officer followed by Lord
of the Song and Hempstead with the riderless Riviera Star continuing to
stay with the field over the jumps. Rangatira held his huge lead
over the two leading back to the home straight followed by Jooli Lad and
The Democrat then Lord of the Song with Hempstead next. Riderless
Riviera Star dodged around the log then jumped the next jump before
deciding he'd had enough past the hedge when he stumbled ducking around
the outside before being caught (making use of the newly installed
option this year and was soon caught and led through the newly installed
gate next to the last jump - these improvements have made it a lot
easier for all to access and pass through that part of the track and is
a lot safer now there is the option to go through there for those
retired from the race). Heading up to the log for the final time Jooli
Lad started to make ground on the leading Rangatira then The Democrat
from Prussian Officer with Lord of the Song next. Over the one
after the log and Lord of the Song set out to challenge Rangatira with
Jooli Lad next then Prussian Officer with It's The Truth starting to run
on from the back from The Democrat as Hempstead and Montefalco were both
retired from the race after losing ground over the log. Over
the second last Lord of the Song joined Rangatira with It's The Truth
joining Jooli Lad for the battle for third until the latter also
knuckled on landing falling in front of Prussian Officer with The
Democrat well back. Lord of the Song charged to the front over the
last and raced away down to the straight to cruise to victory from
Rangatira with It's The Truth third from Prussian Officer and The
Democrat. Both horses that parted ways with their jockeys were
quickly caught and were floated back to the stalls to save time to
reopen the track (as the track crossings are opened as soon as the
horses have returned to the mounting yard after each race).
In the next race Our Snippy just held
off Meadows Jim to win with Marble Rye third while race 7 the MAC over
Just Don't Drive Hcp went to Counter Spin from Dreamtime Baby with
Phoenix Arizona third. Chestnut Charlie defeated Lord Ashford and
Lightning Drew in the last the Barry Biggs Memorial Hcp.
