Morphettville Races - Pictorial Report

4 August  2012

The first Saturday race meeting of the new season got started with two races for the new 3yos and proved to be a very quick return on the day for Peter Moody's Victorian stable and jockey Linda Meech.  In the first Ephemera was the shortpriced favourite and nothing else ever looked likely as the More than ready filly cruised away in the straight to win as she liked over four lengths ahead of Dancing Poetess with Schaduw third.   The second race was more of the same as Ad Valorem filly Meliora was sent out the short priced favourite and waltzed away to win by 4 1/2 lengths from Goldbya with Barely a Beat third.

The locals hit back in the distance race where Yesquire continued in his good form on both the flat and over jumps to be handy to the leaders around the turn then have too much of a sprint for the opposition in the straight winning his 9th race by nearly 3 lengths from Lennybe with Robdon Flyer third.  Winning rider Amy Hermann made it three from three for the lady jockeys on the day so far as well.  The P Stokes trained La Praline by Anabaa was far too good in the next under vigorous riding from Paul Gatt she held off the challenge of Wicked Dreams with Holdontoyahorses third.

The Victorians were to the fore again in race 5 where Border Express from the S Mathrick stable crossed the line nearly two lengths ahead of Iron Lace with Quick 'n' Slick third.     In the Open Sprint North Beach returned to the winners circle for the Gordon Richard's stable in defeating Riahgrand and Ciro Prince.   The Irish Day 1st September Hcp went to Anyways a 10yo Archway gelding who was second up from a spell and prior to that had been racing in Queensland with this race his 13th win from 92 starts with 31 placings.  Anyways is from the Strathalbyn stable of R Hodson and defeated Foodeater and Lexcen as the entire field of 11 crossed the line within 4 1/2 lengths of the winner.  The last race was taken out by Comic Composer who was having his third run after a break of over 12 months winning narrowly from the favourite Handsome As with Ring Me Not third.

After the running of race 4 racegoers were treated to an exhibition gallop by Caulfield Cup winner and Australian Cup & Australasian Oaks placegetter Southern Speed.  In preparation for a second attempt on the Caulfield Cup Southern Speed worked alone completing her gallop without really being pushed out and recording just over 22 seconds for the final 400m.  She is due to resume in the Spring Stakes.

Next week sees a bumper days racing with the Group 3 Spring Stakes which should see the return of several Melbourne bound horses while the jumps season get to the business end with the South Australian Grand National Hurdle (leading into the SA Grand National Steeplechase and then culminating with Irish Day over the next few weeks).
