The 4 star class this year saw only a small field of 10 line up due to many
of the top competitors having been overseas for the Olympics and other
competitions. Shane Rose and Stuart Tinney however still were in the
field. After the dressage Will Enzinger and Wenlock Aquifer were in
the lead on 51.80 from Hazel Shannon & Clifford on 52.10 with Rohan Luxmoore
& Bells N Whistles in third on 53.20. Raced as Aquifer won the first
SA race of the season for 2yos in October 2006 down the straight at Victoria
Park - ironically the same location as the Australian International 3de is
held. He had three subsequent starts in Adelaide before being retired
as a late 3yo. Clifford was registered to race as Sidespin but in two trials
as an early season 2yo in October 2007 he proved too slow to race and was
retired.
Cross Country day made a few changes to the leader board where Hazel Shannon
and Clifford took over the lead after only recording a 0.4 time fault on the
course while Will Enzinger & Wenlock Aquifer recorded 3.2 time faults.
Rohan Luxmoore & Bells N Whistles dropped to 6th after a refusal and time
penalties while Andrew Cooper and Evergem Perfection were the only
combination to go clear on both jumps and time moving up to third place on
59.70 while Will Enzinger and Brittanica MVNZ moved up from 9th to 4th
recording only 5.6 time penalties on their round. However all 10
competitors competed the cross country to move on to the third phase on the
final day - something I cant remember happening at previous Australian
International 3de events.
Into the final phase the showjumping where 3 clear rounds in a row saw Tegan
Lush & Tempus Fugit, Stuart Tinney & Warhawk and Rohan Luxmoore & Bells N
Whistles all holding their places 7th to 5th. There was a 25 point
buffer to the first four going into the showjumping where Will Enzinger &
Britannica MVNZ had a rail to finish fourth on 71.80 before Andrew Cooper &
Evergem Perfection knocked two rails but had enough in hand to hold third
place on 67.70. Will Enzinger and Wenlock Aquifer had three rails down
to just hold second spot on 67.00 with all eyes on the leading pair.
Hazel Shannon and Clifford put on a faultless display to go clear on both
jumping and time to take out the four star class. They also received
the award from TRSA for the highest placed Thoroughbred to have raced or
trialled.
In the 3 star event UK rider Oliver Townend & Napoleon were second after the
dressage on 44.90 behind Tim Boland and GV Billy Elliott on 44.30 with
Samantha Felton & Ricker Ridge Pico Boo in third on 49.20. Fourth
position was Shenae Lowings & Ballyhoo on 50.40 and this pair took out the
highest placed thoroughbred award in the 2 star class last year. Ballyhoo is
by Foxhound and raced as Fox of Donegal for 4 starts all unplaced prior to
moving on to a new equestrian career. The showjumping was held later
on the Friday night so there are no photos but the results shook up the
leaderboard. Oliver Townend and Napoleon went clear on time and
jumping but were the only combination to do so. Tim Boland and Billy
Elliott were eliminated during the showjumping while Samantha Felton and
Ricker Ridge Pico Boo held third place with only one rail down but Shanae
Lowings and Ballyhoo dropped to 13th after 44 jump penalties and 7 time
penalties.
With the cross country the final phase of competition again Oliver Townend
and Napoleon sailed around the course and despite 13.2 time penalties had
enough in hand to take victory on 58.10 from the fast finishing Megan Jones
& Kirby Park Impess who had recorded one time fault in the showjumping & 6.8
time penalties in the cross country to finish on 61.90. Third went to
Samantha Felton & Ricker Ridge Pico Boo on 63.60 while Robert Palm and Koko
Story took 4th place on 71.70 after being 8th after the dressage.
In the 2 star class Gemma Tinney & Annapurna were in the lead after the
dressage on 40.80 with Jessica Rae & Rascal in second on 41.80. In
third were Shenae Lowings and Venture Sky High on 43 while fourth was Katja
Weimann & BP Escapade on 44.60 ahead of Andrew Barnett & Bradgate Park Dante
on 45.90. In the cross country Gemma Tinney & Annapurna recorded 2 time
penalties to hold the lead from Katja Weimann and BP Escapade who moved up
after going clear on both jumps and time. In third was Shenae Lowings
& Venture Sky High who went clear on jumps but had 1.6 time penalties while
Andrew Barnett & Bradgate Park Dante moved up to fourth after going clear.
Simon Tainsh & Vengeance had moved up a spot from 6th to 5th after the cross
country but was found to have injured a tendon so was withdrawn on the
morning for the final phase. A refusal during the cross country pushed
Jessica Rae & Rascal from 2nd to 22nd in what was a very tight competition
throughout the three days.
Into the final phase the showjumping Andrew Barnett & Bradgate Park Dante
went clear again to finish on their dressage score winning the event on
45.90. Second went to Katja Weimann & BP Escapade on 48.60 after a
rail down showjumping with third to Gemma Tinney & Annapurna who had two
rails in the final phase. Emma Mason and Currabeha were 4th on 52.00
after adding just 0.4 time penalties on the cross country phase and were
otherwise clear. Currabeha also took out the TRSA award for the
highest placed off the track thoroughbred. Currabeha had two trials
before finishing last at his only start in September 2011. Fifth place
went to Shenae Lowings & Venture Sky High on 56.60.
The teams event run as part of the 2 star was taken out by the NSW team of
Andrew Bennett & Bradgate Park Dante, Robert Palm & Halycons Dark Secret,
Jessica Rae & Rascal and Sophie Adams & Umunga (who retired during the xc
phase). The Young rider competition went to Gemma Tinney & Annapurna
while the Off the track TRSA award in the young rider class went to
Tayah Andrew & Silver Force. SIlver Force had 4 starts in WA for one
third at PInjarra in a Trophy race before beign retired in early 2011.
Shane Rose was awarded the Anna Savage Medal for a record time.
On the final day of competition there was also a round of the Showjumping
World Cup Qualifier Clint Beresford & Emmaville Jitterbug took out the class
going clear in the fastest time. Clint also went clear on SL Donato
with Stuart Jenkins & Fairview Aliquidam
third.
