The Adelaide Equestrian Festival got underway with the Racing SA CCI 3 Star competition with trot up on Wednesday afternoon and the dressage through the day on Thursday. Georgia Rohde & Cassio Xtreme on 27.5 pending points was in first place from Amilia Schooley & Sandhills Stella on 28 penalty points with Hannah Deegan & HK Hawthorn in third on 28.8 penalty points while Oliver Barrett & Sandhills Briar on 29.7 were close up in 4th while in 5th was Charlotte Lalak & Legolas KPH on 30.4 penalty points.  Cross country reorganised the leaderboard with Geogia Rohde recording only 7.2 time faults to drop to 8th with 34.7 penalty points while Hannah Deegan & HK Hawthorn went clear to take first place on their dressage score.  Oliver Barrett & Sandhills Briar also went clear to move up to second on their dressage score while Amilia Schooley & Sandhills Stella moved down a place after recording 2.8 time faults to finish with 30.8 penalty points.  Fourth spot after the cross country was Emily Gray and Legal Chase who moved up from 9th with a clear run on 32.4 penalty points while Charlee Morton-Sharp & SV Supermaxi were 5th with 32.8 penalty points.  Showjumping and with such a close leaderboard just a rail or two made a huge change on the board.  Charlee Morton -Sharp & SV Super Maxi had 3 rails to finish on 44.8 and moved down the board while 3rd overnight Amilia Schooley & Sandhills Stella had two rails to move down to 8th.  Overnight leader Hannah Deegan and HK Hawthorn had one rail to drop back to third place on 32.9 penalty points while Tahlia Pursell & AStro NZPH went clear to finish in 4th place while Jess Somerfield & APH New Sensation moved from 12th to 5th with a clear round.  Emily Gray & Legal Chase also went clear to take second place with 32.4 penalty points.  Oliver Barrett & Sandhills Briar jumped clear to move up from second to first to win the CCI 3 star while Oliver also took out the Young Rider event.

Friday morning saw the CCI-4-S class start the dressage where Shane Rose & Easy Turn took first place on 29.1 penalty points with Cathryn Herbert & Wimborne Constable in second place on 30.5 penalty points and Hannah Klep & Tulara Chicouve in third on 32.9.  Olivia Shore & Dreamcatcher were 4th on 33.4 with Shane Rose & Holy Moses in 5th on 33.9.  The cross country course changed the leader board with all combinations recording timefaults while Shane Rose & Holy Moses were eliminated after 3 refusals &  Olivia Shore & Dreamcatcher and Cathryn Herbert & Wimborne Constable dropped out of the top 5 with a refusal on course.  Shane Rose & Easy Turn recorded 7.6 time penalties but kept their lead on 36.7 penalty points with Sophia HIll & Tulara Baltango moving up from 10th to be second with only 4.8 time penalties added to their score to finish on 44.7.  Edward Darby & Dawn of the Day moved up from 7th to third place with only 10 time penalies added for a score of 45.1 with Sam Woods and SS Eight Count moving from 6th to 4th with 12 time penalties for an overall score of 46.5 while in fifth was Hannah Klep & Tulara Chicouve who added 14 penalty points for a total of 46.9 penalty points.  Showjumping was also crucial in the outcome of the event with the 4 clear rounds coming from first four placings.  S Woods & SS Eight Count had two rails to drop back one spot to 5th on 54.5 penalty points while Mackenzie Walch moved up from 6th to take 4th place with a clear round on 49.2 .  Sophia Hill & Tulara Baltango on 44.7 was second and Hannah Klep & Tulara Chicouve on 46.9 was third.  Shane Rose and Easy Turn claimed first place remaining on their overnight score of 36.7.

Friday afternoon saw the 5 star class which featured last years winner David Middleton & WEC In The Money, Shane Rose returning with two horses new to the Adelaide Equestrian Festival audiences and Hazel Shannon with the ageless Willingapark Clifford.  Shenae Lowings & Bold Venture did an amazing test to take the lead on 27.4 penalty points from Hazel Shannon & Willingpark Clifford on 30.3 penalty points.  Andrew Cooper & Hey Arnold were in third place on 33.4 penalty points with Andrew on his second horse Sharvalley Thunder in 4th on 33.8penalty points.  In 5th pleace was Joel Funnell & Airbrushed on 34 penalty points as ex racehorses dominated the leader board.  The cross country took its toll on the competition with overnight leader Shena Lowings going well until Bold Venture did not like the look of the grandstand corners and was retired while Andrew Cooper and Hey Arnold retired at the water.  Andrew & Sharvalley Thunder fell late in the course after looking impressive a few jumps earlier (horse and rider were fine).  Joel Funnel and Airbrushed fell at fence 10 (horse and rider were fine).   Meanwhile Shane Rose & The Bandit powered through the course to be the only combination to go clear on jumps and time and moved up from 9th to lead on 36.3 penalty points.  Hazel Shannon and Willingpark Clifford had 11.6 penalty points added to their score to finish on 41.9 penalty points and remain in second place.  Samuel Jeffree & Wimborne Conjuror added just 0.8 of a time fault to their score to move up to third on 46.4 penalty points while Jess Somerfield and Finch Farm Carpentaria moved up to 4th with 14 time penalties for a score of 50.3.  David Middleton & IN The Money had 11 jump faults for a score of 52.0 and 6th place.  Showjumping especially when there are no clear rounds normally changes a leader board dramatically.  Very unusually for this event despite not one clear round all combinations remained in the same order bar two from cross country day.  Sadly Sophia HIll & Humble Glory were eliminated in the showjumping when they had been going well. David Middleton & In The Money had 2 rails for a final score of 60 penalty points in 5th place while Jess SOmerfield & Finch Farm Carpentaria had 2 rails and 0.4 time penalty for a score of 58.7 penalty points and 4thplace.  Samuel Jeffree & Wimborne Conjuror had one rail for a score of 50.4 penalty points.  Riding last Shane Rose and The Bandit had a two rail buffer over Hazel Shannon and Willingpark Clifford but a rail at the second last jump dropping the pair to second place on a score of 48.3 penalty points.  Hazel Shannon and Willingpark Clifford had one rail to finish on a score of 45.9 penalty points and became the first horse and rider to win the event four times.  Their first win was in 2016 then 2018 and 2019 (click on the equestrian stories link below to read about & see photos from these events) .
